How to be a healthy cheapskate
Mar. 9th, 2013 12:58 amOne of the roadblocks that people come up against when starting out on a whole foods plant based (WFPB) diet is the perceived cost. I thought it was going to be a pricey proposition, too. Boy was I wrong! It turned out that when I eliminated meat, dairy, and processed stuff, and purchased grains in bulk, I was able to start to purchase mostly organic local food and still see a general decline in my weekly food cost. Part of this, admittedly, is that I live in the best place on earth for local, organic, fresh produce. But not always.

It can be intimidating at first, but it IS possible to be a healthy cheapskate, if you know where to look.

Starting weight: 228.8
Last week's weight: 180.6
Current weight: 175.0
This week's loss: -5.6
Total loss: 53.6
STG: 170
I checked it four times, because I didn't believe it. I knew I had lost weight this week, and I was feeling pretty good about the weigh in, but dang!
This week has been an exercise in how to eat out and over at others' homes, in and around social engagements. Guess I succeeded. There was veggie sushi, pho, veggie chili at A and F's place, and then last night. Last night I went to spin class at the gym because it rained and I couldn't commute. In between work and the gym I looked in my fridge for a quick snack and snagged most of a pack of crimini mushrooms. This, incidentally, might have been the moment I realized how far from 'normal' my diet has become, that raw dry mushrooms were a delicious snack. Anyway, after spin I was off to burner costume/craft night, and swung by home to pick up yarn and grab something to eat. All my popcorn research paid off, because I was able to pop some really quickly, and add some agave nectar to it to make it 'kettle corn' (video coming soon to a youtube channel near you) and boost the calorie content a bit. I also snagged an apple. Fast food at its tastiest.
As far as slip-ups, I don't think there were any this week. Alcohol is still being consumed, but as always, my standing rule with booze is that if I'm still losing weight (and not in training for a specific event) then moderate consumption is fine.
...............
My body is going through another shape change, this time around my middle (as opposed to last time there was a big shift after Burning Man, where all the weight seemed to shed from my upper body and face). I was crocheting last night at craft night and looked down at my middle and realized there was....less of me. I had room for more yarn in my lap. heh. It was just weird, because its not how I've looked, EVER, as an adult. My size 14 jeans are starting to become too large, and when I put my hands on my hips I'm not nearly as...squishy. ;) This dysmorphic thing is such a trip.
...............
And just because I haven't done it in a while, here's some PICZ OF FUD OMG111!!!!!!!!!

pho-shizzle
Dec. 12th, 2012 05:51 pmMaking pho at home is a lot of work and not cost effective. Better to go down the street to Pho 5th Avenue and have them make it for you, the way you like it.
( pho-to (see what I did there?) )
I used a 'pho veggie broth' from Whole Foods that was pre-spiced, but it was too heavy on the anise and had waaay too much sodium in it. And it cost $4, only a dollar less than my usual at the aforementioned favorite noodle joint. I may try with a low sodium veggie broth later, but probably not. Pho is one of the only foods out where I know I always have a 'safe' option, and so I'll probably save it for going out.
There is nothing like wilted bok choy though. yumyumyum.

Experiments in Baking
Dec. 5th, 2012 09:28 pmBaking has always been a fun activity for me, and I love showing up at gatherings with cookies. Because who doesn't like some cookies? Also, it can be a good way to harness frenetic energy productively, especially when I'm thinking about Stuff. When I hit my short term weight loss goal I bought a few new cookbooks. Living alone has afforded me few opportunities to bake for others, but I decided to give it a shot on Saturday when I knew I could distribute goods to merry makers at the OB Christmas parade.

I used this recipe here. I added about a third of a block of tofu, some broccoli, celery, carrots, and snowpeas. Garnished with cilantro and green onion.

OMFG. That's a definite keeper. Not something I can have everyday, since its got a little more fat in it than my normal fare, but it will be in semi-regular rotation for sure.

winning at dinner
Sep. 28th, 2012 06:19 pmPretty proud of myself here. I was able to find food completely within my perameters at LAX . My choices were Chilis, Burger King, and Starbucks. I went Chilis, and ordered Jalepeno sweet and sour chicken stir fry: no meat, extra veggies, no sauce. This is what came out:

I continue to be shocked at what passes for healthy in restaurants. At the Chilis I was just at, the healthy items menu proudly offered entrees with less than 750 calories and 8 grams of saturated fat. Isn't that crazy?? That's more calories, roughly, than I have in two meals...and definitely more saturated fat than I eat in maybe two or three days...
And yes, I had a beer with dinner. What's your point? ;)
