Fire Dance Class
Sep. 11th, 2008 08:06 amIt took me a long time to work up the nerve to go, y'know? I mean, you watch these people dance on the website and they're so polished, so beautiful, so....LA. What if I didn't fit in at all? What if I was too square for the hipsters and not funky enough for the burners (should there be any there)? It took me an hour to crawl into Santa Monica coming straight from class. Was it really worth the drive?
As someone who is a creature of habit, sometimes its very difficult to go outside my comfort zone. I'm so happy I did though. Fire dance class was amazing! My anxieties about who I would find there were immediately dispelled: there were people of all sizes, shapes, and ages there, and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. There were some really nice burners (I met some DFT's!) from whom I got email addresses so we can get tied into some local events. It's really difficult with school/work (for both of us), but I think that making an effort to be more social outside of my work circle would be a nice change of pace. Just as I suspected: in talking to a bunch of people, there are no fire spinning groups in OC. Everyone seems to be in LA. There is a group of OC burners on Yahoo, so perhaps I could get one started after I learn more stuff.
I've discovered that, while I'll start with the poi (the class schedule works best), I really want to learn to spin staff. And, with a little one on one instruction, I learned that I do not suck at hula-hooping. :)
I will be on fire before the new year! Yea!
